A fictional band. Real Dengue Fever songs. And a father and daughter grappling with a horrific past. Part concert, part historical reckoning, Lauren Yee’s Cambodian Rock Band wades through the waters of family, survival, and the complex nature of trauma. Effortlessly moving between 1970s Cambodia and 2008, the play follows Chum, a genocide survivor who returns to Cambodia for the first time in decades. Meanwhile, his daughter Neary seeks justice by gathering evidence to prosecute one of the regime’s most infamous war criminals, completely unaware of her father’s connection to the crimes. Haunting them both is Duch, a charismatic yet chilling figure drawn from real Khmer Rouge history.

Powered by a live rock band and soulful vocals, this high-octane show pulses with energy as it confronts unimaginably horrific loss. Cambodian Rock Band is a vibrant story about familial love, resilience, and music that has continued to rock long after history tried to silence it.
