Explore the ways that the American Civil War (1861-1865) shaped Canadian society, politics and military - and why its legacies still matter today.
Today, Canada stands as a proud and independent power, defined by diverse identities, a federal parliamentary system, and strong institutions. But did you know many of these foundations were forged in response to a war we weren’t officially part of?
Close to Conflict invites you to explore how the American Civil War set Canadian society, politics and military on a transformative path, and why its legacies still matter today.
Explore contemporary perspectives on how Canada evolved from a group of separate and vulnerable British colonies into a unified, active, and integral member of the British Empire, and then eventually an independent power on the world stage. Learn about how the Civil War catalyzed the development of our armed forces and shaped our political system. Discover how Black Freedom Seekers escaping enslavement found legal freedom here and began a fight for social equality that continues to this day. Delve into the history of treaty relationships with Plains First Nations and how the border—then and now—continues to shape lives and identities.
