About Rideau Hall

Rideau Hall has been the official residence of the Governor General of Canada since 1867. Located at 1 Sussex Drive in Rockcliffe, the estate covers 32 hectares (79 acres) of gardens, forests, and manicured grounds — all open to the public for free.

It's one of Ottawa's best-kept secrets for a free outing. The grounds are quiet, well-maintained, and far less crowded than the nearby Parliament Hill area.

What to See

  • State Rooms Tour — Free guided tours of the Governor General's working residence. Walk through the rooms where the Governor General fulfils official duties, welcomes dignitaries, and honours Canadians. The residence houses a fine collection of Canadian art and furniture
  • Grounds and Gardens — 32 hectares of gardens, forested trails, and open green space. The grounds include flower gardens, a cricket pitch, and mature tree-lined pathways
  • Greenhouse — A heritage greenhouse open to visitors
  • Picnic Area and Playground — Tables and a play structure for families
  • Winter Skating Rink — A free outdoor skating rink operates on the grounds in winter (bring your own skates)
