Waiting for Godot - Inuktitut

Waiting for Godot - Inuktitut

This production is part of the GCTC 26/27 Season.

[Image description: Text per below. On a dark sage textured background, a black and white photo, attached by vintage photo corners, shows an Inuk man sitting on a wooden seat outdoors, wearing a parka and gloves, reading a magazine.]

A 662 OVA (Nunavut) and Volcano (Toronto) creative collaboration, produced in association with Great Canadian Theatre Company, NAC Indigenous Theatre and the NAC’s National Creation Fund

Written by Samuel BeckettTranslated by Ruth Angutiqjuaq, Tatanniq Idlout, Carol Saqpinaq Kunnuk, Kaittaasi Peter and Mary PetooloosieDirected by Tatanniq Idlout and Ross Manson

Vladimir and Estragon wait endlessly for someone named Godot, passing the time in Inuktitut, the most widely spoken language of the North. Hungry, battered, bored and deeply bound to one another, they share a kinship that is tender, grumpy, and enduring, relying on their wit and companionship to make life bearable.

Join Beckett’s famous duo as they banter, bicker, and wait for Godot. This legendary play is performed in Inuktitut, with subtitles and sections in English.

An important note on the show art:

This historical photograph is doubly anonymous. Despite archival research and community connections, we were unable to identify the Inuk man or the photographer.

The absence of attribution is a common issue in historical photographs of Inuit people, who were often unidentified or generically labeled in archival records. The photo is titled “Eskimo reading Saturday Evening Post in the arctic region.” We include this note to acknowledge that erasure and to draw attention to the broader colonial practices that contributed to it.

Tickets to this show are only available through a 5-Play Subscription.

"Waiting for Godot is somehow the most contemporary Inuit story I know: the relationship of powerlessness to power; the place of humour in dealing with a hard life; the idea of endless waiting; the disappointment; the need for patience; and the adversity the main characters face everyday of their lives."
