When news arrives that the Hollywood director Robert Flaherty is coming to the neighbouring island of Inishmore to film his movie The Man of Aran, “cripple” Billy Craven sees an opportunity to escape the poverty, cruelty, and claustrophobic boredom of his life on the remote island of Inishmaan.
While the plot twists and turns Martin McDonagh’s eccentric characters are funny, vicious, bigoted, and surprisingly kind. Rumour-starved, the tiny community relies on Johnnypateenmike to keep them informed with local gossip, trading his news for a bit of food, often nothing more than a can of peas.
While the darkly funny play explores themes of belonging, cruelty, isolation and escape, it is the power of storytelling, McDonagh reminds us, that can create identity and provide solace from the harsh realities of life.
The Cripple of Inishmaan is described as a "dark comedy" that, while featuring humour, often challenges the audience with uncomfortable, bleak, and violent content.
