JOSIAH unfolds as a tapestry of history, illuminating Josiah Henson’s journey from the shadows of enslavement to the dawn of freedom in Canada. This solo performance highlights his transition turning hardship to hope. Based on the 1849 autobiography of Josiah Henson, the play dramatizes his unwavering resilience, determination and faith; the indomitable spirit which led him to become a respected leader, minister and teacher. He was born into slavery in Maryland, enduring 41 years of unimaginable brutality and persecution before escaping to Canada. His story inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe to create ‘Uncle Tom’ in the seminal novel of the 19th Century – Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Amid today’s ongoing challenges to human rights and historical truth, Josiah Henson’s story stands as a powerful testament to resilience and the transformative force of faith and determination. It is an important story that must be told. His journey not only confronts the injustices of our past but also galvanizes a commitment to justice and equality. Josiah Henson’s triumph over adversity has left a meaningful legacy in Canada, continuing to inspire hope and the pursuit of equality.
