Adikavi is a groundbreaking musical dance ballet presented by Jeevan Jyoti Performing Arts. This production marks the first large-scale dance drama dedicated to the life and spiritual legacy of the 15th-century saint-poet Narsinh Mehta, the "Adikavi" (The First Poet) of Gujarati literature.
Creative Vision
Adikavi is the brainchild of Punita Patel, who serves as the architect of this cultural masterpiece through her Concept, Script, and Artistic Direction. Under her guidance, the ballet transcends a simple biography, meticulously weaving historical hagiography with classical aesthetics to bridge the gap between ancient devotion and modern stagecraft. The result is a profound, multi-sensory exploration of the human spirit that elevates the life of Narsinh Mehta into a universal story of faith and artistic awakening.
From Silence to Song
A central narrative arc explores Narsinh’s childhood, where he was mute and unable to speak.
The Awakening: Through evocative Odissi movements, the ballet depicts his years of silence and his eventual retreat to the forest.
The Gift of Speech: Legend tells that after a divine encounter with Lord Shiva and witnessing the celestial Raas Leela, his voice was miraculously restored. The stage erupts into a celebratory Bharatanatyam sequence as he utters his first verses, marking the dawn of Gujarati poetic tradition.
Musical & Poetic Soul
The production is anchored by a live score from a sophisticated musical ensemble, led by the acclaimed vocalist and composer Shri Vaibhav Mankad
A Rhythmic Dialogue: The music masterfully renders both Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. The Tabla and Sitar anchor the Hindustani segments, while the Mridangam drives the Carnatic rhythms. The Violin and Flute serve as melodic bridges, harmonising the two styles into a singular spiritual soundscape.
Legendary Ragas
Raag Kedar: Featured in the "Hundi" scene, representing the raga Mehta "pawned" and Lord Krishna personally redeemed. Raag Malhar: Invoked in a stunning sequence where his devotional singing brings life-giving rain to a parched land. Literary Foundation: The ballet breathes life into Mehta’s timeless works, including his morning Prabhatiya, the philosophical "Akhil Brahmand Ma," and the world-renowned anthem of empathy, "Vaishnav Jan To."
A Tapestry of Movement
The choreography utilises an ensemble of 18 dancers to narrate the poet's divine encounters through three distinct classical forms:
Bharatanatyam: Providing the rhythmic foundation and intense storytelling (Abhinaya).Kathak: Capturing the fluid grace and storytelling cycles of the Krishna Bhakti tradition.Odissi:
Adding a lyrical, sculpturesque dimension to the production’s spiritual imagery.
