Barbatuques with Victor Anastacio

Barbatuques with Victor Anastacio

Experience the richness and diversity of Brazilian music through the Brazilian Grooves Concert Series, featuring outstanding local artists, celebrated Canadian performers, and special guests arriving directly from Brazil. From obscure underground discoveries to internationally acclaimed, world-renowned artists, the series showcases the many sounds of Brazil—from samba and pagode to contemporary, vocal, and instrumental music—creating unique cultural connections through live performance in Ottawa.

In this intimate format, the co-founders of the world-renowned Brazilian group Barbatuques — Lu Horta, Helô Ribeiro, and Mariah Rocha — deliver a vibrant performance where body percussion serves as the common thread between voice, rhythm, and original compositions.

Through songs drawn from their respective artistic journeys as well as the group’s iconic repertoire, the trio explores the infinite sonic richness of the body as an instrument. Claps, pulses, breaths, and vocal harmonies weave together to create a musical experience that is at once powerful, sensitive, and deeply rooted in rhythm.

On stage, they are joined by David Dafré on guitar and Marcelo Effori on samplers and percussion, adding modern and organic textures to this unique rhythmic encounter between Brazil and Montreal. An electrifying show that celebrates music in its purest form.

Victor Anastacio is a Brazilian-born classical guitarist, composer, and music educator based in Ottawa, Canada. A graduate of the Conservatório Musical Dr. Carlos de Campos de Tatuí, he was a scholarship recipient in the institution’s Performance Program and earned 2nd place in its 5th Internal Classical Guitar Competition. Teaching guitar since 2008, Victor combines performance, composition, and education in his artistic practice. His project Moongate is a collection of impressionistic works for classical guitar, flute, and double bass, inspired by landscapes and visual art, exploring atmosphere, color, and emotion through sound.
