Joe Farnsworth is one of the most prolific jazz drummers of his generation, with a career spanning over 400 recordings and decades of performances at the world’s most iconic venues. A two-time Grammy nominee, Farnsworth has dedicated his life to mastering the jazz tradition to bridge the gap between its storied past and its vibrant future.
Raised in a musical family and mentored by legends like Alan Dawson, Arthur Taylor, and Jimmy Lovelace, Joe moved to NYC in 1990. He quickly became a staple of the scene, co-founding the renowned collective One for All and developing long-standing collaborations with titans such as Pharoah Sanders (16 years), Cedar Walton (10 years), and Benny Golson (8 years). His resume reads like a "who’s who" of jazz, including work with McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, and Horace Silver.
As a leader, Farnsworth has released eight albums, including his acclaimed Smoke Sessions trilogy: Time to Swing, City of Sounds, and his latest, In What Direction Are You Headed? (2023). Described by Benny Golson as a "genius" who shares his "intellect and motivational heart with the world," Joe remains committed to the mantra passed down to him from Max Roach: "Listen to learn. And learn to listen."
