Manotick Village: A Neighbourhood Guide
A guide to Manotick, the heritage village on the Rideau River south of Ottawa. Covers Watson's Mill, Main Street shops and restaurants, seasonal events, and how to get there.

Manotick is a heritage village on the Rideau River, about 25 km south of downtown Ottawa. Named from an Ojibwa word meaning "island in the river," the village was established in 1864 by Moss Kent Dickinson. It joined the City of Ottawa in 2001 during amalgamation but has kept its small-town character — a walkable Main Street lined with over 140 shops and restaurants, a working 1860s grist mill, and a calendar of community events throughout the year.
Population is roughly 5,300. The drive from downtown takes about 30 minutes.
Watson's Mill
5525 Dickinson Street
The centrepiece of Manotick. Watson's Mill is a fully operational 1860s water-powered grist and flour mill — one of the few remaining operational grist mills in North America and the only industrial heritage site in Ottawa.
Built in 1860 by Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Currier, the mill sits at Dickinson Square Conservation Area beside the Manotick dam. Guided tours explain the mill's history and machinery. On Sundays from 1–3 PM, the mill runs live milling demonstrations — you can purchase the stone-ground flour.
The mill is also known for its ghost story: in 1861, Ann Crosby Currier (Joseph Currier's second wife) was killed when her crinoline dress was caught in one of the turbine shafts on the second floor. She was flung against a pillar and died instantly, just six weeks after the marriage. Reported sightings of her ghost have made Watson's Mill one of Ottawa's most famous haunted sites.
- Season: Open May to October. Daily during summer (May–early September); Wednesday to Sunday in fall. 10 AM – 4:45 PM.
- Admission: By donation (suggested $3 per person; children 12 and under free)
- Free parking on-site
Dickinson House Museum
